I have been, or can be if you click on a link and make a purchase, compensated via a cash payment, gift, or something else of value for writing this post. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
I am approached by Mommys that are great at what they do. They continually outperform their peers, receive regular promotions, are identified as key talent within the team/department and yet they are stuck in their job. They have become so dependable and reliable for producing exceptional work, that the company can not afford for them to do anything else.
Our current global marketplace values diversity of roles and responsibilities more than a single area of focus. As the world changes, its employees will need to change as well. An employer must know that its key talent, can grow and change with the changing environment. When we successfully matriculate through a single line function, we become known as ONLY SUCCEEDING in that function. Therefore we have only demonstrated our value, in that one area of the business. That excitement that people use to have for us because of our success has turned into “why can’t we do more.” So how do we build the ability to traverse across areas of focus. We in fact have to “stop digging.”
We have created an over reliance on ourselves. Each of our monumental improvements made the hole we are stuck in a foot deeper. So in just 6 years you can end up being 6 feet under, so now what? We have dug enough, now it is time to carve out some steps to climb out of our hole and see what the world has to offer. We need an exit strategy based on our current position.
If we truly are successful, as we are solving problems within the business, we must develop a way to: 1) continuously deliver value, 2) make the transition plan as that value is being delivered and 3) find the next significant challenge to the business in work in that area.
