One month into the new year, how’s it going? [AD] Thanks to Responsibility.org @go_faar I had the chance to discuss parenting teens with Brian Coleman @mrbriancoleman, the 2019 School Counselor of the year and he truly dropped some gems.

First, your toolbox probably will not work with the kids so leave it closed. Listen more. When the kids say “mom, you don’t understand, it’s ok to agree and ask them to explain. Don’t bring your experience unless they ask for it. They usually don’t want to hear it. The best thing you can do is just listen and attend.

Second, check in. Make a habit of scheduling a regular time to check in with your kids on real things.” I try to do this while driving in the car or over a favorite treat.

Third, normalize failure! We all want our kids to be a better version of ourselves but we need to let them know that there were times when we fell down but we got up. The more successful the parent, the harder it is for your children to know they can fail.

Lastly, navigating conflict. This is rarely easy for adults so let’s help our kids navigate this and build better relationships. Peer pressure often results in a yes when you really want it to be no. Role-play how you say no and how it made you feel. No is a complete sentence.

Wishing you continued success for the months ahead and I hope when the clock officially signals the new year, you can look back and be proud of the progress made. Remember to be patient, because it’s a journey and not a sprint.
