Today, the country selects who will be the leader and Chief of the United States for the next four years. I am so glad that it is almost over and I hope that we learn and grow from this. Almost every morning for the past few months my son and I watched Good Morning America before heading out for the day. One particular morning left me in tears. He asked me why did it seem that the world hated President Obama because of the color of skin. As I fought back the tears, I realized that it was time to tell him how people will judge him because of the color of skin. I struggled with my words as I explained to him how many viewed the African American male. He asked me if that was why I pushed him so hard to do his best. Before I could answer, he stood up and gave me the biggest hug and then proceeded to tell me that he would not let me down.
I promised my son that I would not let him down either. We plan to spend more time embracing the skin that we are in. I have always taught my kids to be proud of themselves but I realize I need to show them even more…
