Disney's Lion King returns to theaters on July 19th and in effort to bring awareness to the dwindling population of African Lions, Disney has donated more than $1.5 million to Lion Recovery Fund and its partners and will make additional grants as well as invite fans to help double the donation for a total contribution of up to $3 million. Fans may participate by taking part in celebratory experiences and purchasing special edition products, as part of The Lion King Protect the Pride campaign.
The Lion King | Protect The Pride
The Protect the Pride campaigns reminds us that we are all connected by the circle of life and why it is important to protect and revitalized the lion population. The African Lion population has been halved over the past 25 years due to a variety of threats including poaching and destruction of habitats.
How Can You Help?
Animal Kingdom: For every guest who rides the Kilimanjaro Safaris® Expedition at Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park in Florida during opening week of “The Lion King” film (July 19 – 25, 2019), Disney Conservation Fund will donate $2 (up to $350,000) to the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund’s efforts to help double the number of lions across Africa by 2050. Theme park admission is required.
The Art and Making of the Lion King Book: In celebration of the new book, “The Art and Making of The Lion King” and to lend support to the Lion Recovery Fund, Disney Publishing Worldwide and the Disney Conservation Fund will collectively donate $25,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Network to help “Protect the Pride” through efforts that engage communities to ensure a future for African wildlife and their habitats.
Support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums: Zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) are helping to ensure a future for African wildlife, including lions. Visit AZA.org/joinus to learn more about ways you can get involved and to find your local AZA-accredited facilities
Donate to the Lion Recovery Fund: The Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) invests in the most innovative and effective projects across Africa that can recover lions and restore their landscapes. The LRF seeks, assesses, and invests in the best ideas for lion recovery from institutions large or small, with 100% of every dollar donated deployed directly on the ground.
Simba and Nala Plush- shopDisney: 40,000 Special Edition Simba and Nala plush lions are available for purchase at Disney stores* across the globe. Each of the 40,000 plush represents one of the lions Disney and the Lion Recovery Fund are working to ensure a future for.
