Mommys can get so hung up about things that are usually minor. Being promoted is one of those things that come in different phases. Initially you will get promoted because you out-perform your peers. That same strategy does not work in the long-term. Promotions are extremely politically based. You may be the best person in the company for the job, but you may also be the most threatening. If I hire you into this role, will you be in a place to take my role within the next few years.
It is time for you to let go of the promotion and start aligning with what you actually want to do. Your title has nothing to do with what you are capable of doing. The key to you achieving an endless promotion potential is your unseen value. Longer term promotions are based on a perceived ability that you can motivate your peer group not just out do them. It is dependent on your ability to influence senior executives without any power to direct them. And lastly you must deliver high impact outcomes that exceed the expectations of everyone involved. This is a belief based system that you must be willing to accept, internalize and do consistently without any doubt.
You may have great ideas, or even think “I already do this.” But if you are not in control of when you are promoted you have a huge opportunity to improve. If you have always been in environments where doubt is expected and failure is accepted you truly do need a drill sergeant. That drill sergeant in your career will inspire you when you are ready to quit and build you up at your weakest moments. But that best thing that career drill sergeant will give is that initial motivation to get started on your career improvements immediately.
