I recently talked to a Mommy that “helped a young lady go from a single mom in poverty to a sustainable life with consistent income.” I responded with “that’s great, now how are you going to start a non-profit to help even more Mommys.” The usual response is to that great idea is “that takes too much time”, “I don’t know where to start” or “who is going to help me?”
If we just choose the first problem “that takes too much time”, lets expand it out to something that we can actually address. What takes time:
1) filing 501(3)c.
2) finding people to that will receive the service.
3) defining what services to offer.
4) organizing how to deliver the services.
5) finding sources of money.
So now our 1 problem of “that takes too much time” is now 5 more problems. Now we can focus on 1 of the 5 more problems and turn the problem into a verifiable goal to actually solve the problem, versus just talking about it. We will choose 4) organizing how to deliver the services. This turns into four ways to discuss the problem:
a) volunteer at a local non-profit that is currently helping others, and learn their approach to providing their service.
b) find a specific geographic demographic to target.
c) contact local non-profit and government agencies to find what services are now available to single mothers in poverty.
d) draft your own approach based on completing the above steps.
We have made 1 more problem into four solutions. This approach enables us to work toward a goal. Mentally it is difficult to work on “that takes too much time” because of the ambiguity. When we can break the problem down into measurable solutions, everything becomes very clear. Once we set clear targets that must be accomplished to move forward, we are able to made significant progress to our goal.
